Our Take
Kimes Elementary School is where Streator’s public-school journey begins. Part of Streator Elementary District 44, Kimes is home to Pre-K through first grade, so every building, routine and teacher is focused on the youngest learners. The school’s own welcome message describes it as the beginning of a child’s journey into education and stresses preparing kids emotionally, socially, morally and intellectually, not just academically, which is exactly the right emphasis at this age. The school has been growing, too; modular classrooms were added for the 2020-21 school year to make room for more students. It sits on Reading Street, and the main office number is 815-672-2496. Parents should check the Kimes page on the district website for calendars, supply lists and enrollment information. After first grade, students move on to Centennial Elementary. For families with toddlers approaching school age, this is the first school to get to know.
