Riverview Cemetery
1102 W. Main Street, Streator, IL 61364
Our Take
Riverview Cemetery, established in 1881 on West Main Street along the Vermilion River, is one of the best places to understand the people who built Streator. Its grounds hold generations of the miners, glassworkers, merchants, civic leaders and veterans who shaped the town during its coal and glass boom, including veterans of every American war since the Civil War. Rather than a gloomy stop, it is presented as a peaceful landscape of mature trees, open lawns and historic markers, and the grounds are open daily during daylight hours. The cemetery’s website lets you search more than 14,000 burial records and browse a curated archive of notable figures and monuments drawn from a historical brochure, which is a big help for genealogists. City tourism materials mention a self-guided tour booklet with a map. Volunteers place flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day. For records questions, the site directs visitors to the Streatorland Historical Society at 815-673-3558.
