Our Take
Poco a Poco is a nonprofit music education organization based on a rural property on North 200 East Road, and it punches well above its weight for a small-town arts group. Its centerpiece is a Summer Music Fest with visiting faculty, a high school Young Artist Program and a junior training program that give serious young musicians intensive instruction without heading to a big city. The group also runs community ensembles, a spring sampler event and an “Explore Streator” initiative, and it has built an endowment and donor base to keep programs going. The name, Italian for “little by little,” fits its patient approach to musical growth. Families with music students should check the FAQ and application dates early. Volunteers and donors are welcome, and audiences can attend public concerts.
