Hopalong Cassidy Trail & Canoe Launch
Canoe launch: 500 block of W. Main Street, Streator, IL 61364
Our Take
The Hopalong Cassidy Trail is a half-mile walk along the Vermilion River named for Streator native Clarence Mulford, the author who created the cowboy hero Hop-a-Long Cassidy. That literary connection gives an ordinary riverside stroll a fun hometown twist. The trail features butterfly gardens, picnic tables and shelters, shade and river views, and it is part of the broader Vermilion River Greenway that preserves open space along the water. The nearby canoe launch on the 500 block of West Main Street is the city’s only listed canoe and kayak access point, so paddlers should know about it, and anglers can fish from the area too. A half mile is short enough for kids and casual walkers, but the scenery makes it worth lingering. Pair it with the Hopalong Mural Park a few blocks east for a full Hopalong-themed outing along the river.
