First United Methodist Church at 201 South Monroe is one of downtown Streator’s historic congregations, sitting right on the street lined with church buildings near City Park. Unusually, it offers a Saturday 5:30 p.m. worship service in addition to Sunday mornings, which is handy for families whose weekends fill up with youth sports and work shifts. United Methodist churches tend to blend traditional hymns and liturgy with an emphasis on community service, and the congregation’s Facebook page is the best place to find current service times, livestreams, potlucks and outreach events. Its Chamber membership as a civic investor reflects a congregation that sees itself as part of the city’s life outside Sunday mornings.
