Streator Ace Hardware is the rare downtown hardware store that still occupies a whole run of Main Street storefronts, and it uses every foot. The department list reads like a small department store: hand and power tools, plumbing, electrical, paint, lawn and garden, housewares, automotive, sporting goods, clothing and a gift shop. That breadth matters in a town where the nearest home-improvement superstore is a drive away. It is locally owned under the Ace co-op, so you get national-brand stock with a counter staff who answer to neighbors rather than a regional office. The 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. schedule every day of the week is unusually generous for an independent, which makes it the obvious call when a pipe bursts on a Sunday morning. For key cutting, a matched bolt or a paint color, this is where we would start.
