Chalkey’s Tavern on East 12th Street is a south-side institution, and the city guide notes it serves food, making it a neighborhood spot for a meal as well as a drink. Its success seems to have spawned a second location, Chalkey’s East on Main Street downtown, which is usually a sign that a local brand has a loyal following. The 12th Street area also hosts E&J 12th Street Tap, so this block is a south-side nightlife pocket of its own. Some third-party listings give daytime-into-evening hours, but sources disagree, so I’ve left hours blank; call ahead. For south-side residents, Chalkey’s is a natural local hangout, and for visitors, it offers a glimpse of the neighborhood-tavern culture that’s been part of Streator’s character for generations, with food on hand. As with most small-town taverns, hours and kitchen times can shift, so call ahead or check social media before making a special trip, and remember that bars with video gaming are 21-and-over in those areas.
