The U.S. Department of Energy announced Tuesday a conditional loan commitment of up to $5 billion for upgrades at Constellation nuclear plants, including the LaSalle station, along with Dresden, Quad Cities, Byron, Clinton and Braidwood. The work is expected to add nearly 1,100 megawatts of generation across Illinois and two other states, enough for about 930,000 homes. State Sen. Sue Rezin of Morris praised the announcement, saying expanding existing nuclear plants is the kind of investment needed as electricity demand rises.
