Our Take
South End Bait & Tackle on Armory Court is the early-morning stop for anyone fishing the Vermilion River, which runs right past the south side of Streator, or the strip-mine ponds and lakes around LaSalle County. A dedicated bait shop sells what big stores cannot keep well: live bait, plus terminal tackle and lures chosen for local water. It also passes along the most useful thing of all, the word on what is biting. Opening at 6 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 6:30 on weekends, including Sunday, is built for anglers who want to be on the bank by first light. It is closed Mondays. Our hours and phone come from a public places summary rather than the shop itself, so call ahead.
