Our Take
Danchris Nursery on Bernstein Street is a family landscaping business and garden center that also runs a gift shop and sells antiques, an unusual combination that makes a spring plant run more interesting than usual. Its website pays tribute to founder Daniel Salata, who died in 2014, and the business continues under the family. An independent nursery earns its place by stocking trees, shrubs and perennials that actually survive northern Illinois winters, and by offering advice on why last year’s hydrangea sulked. The site also points to do-it-yourself landscaping help. Hours are Monday through Saturday 8 to 5, closed Sunday, per the nursery’s own site. It is a Streator Chamber member. Spring is the busiest season for nurseries, so weekday mornings are the calmer time to shop.
